To start off, I’d like to thank the scholarship members whom talked with me about a whole variety of things, the people at IGDA who gave us continuous support across all 4 days, and GREE, TAYUTAU, and GeePlus, who took the time to show us what their studios were like during development.
During the studio tours, I learned about a lot of interesting things, and got a chance to directly see what their environments were like during game development. From that, I also learned about each of the 3 companies’ unique philosophies, their methods of development, and their use of an office space. I feel that their use of an office space, in particular, could be useful when applied to group work in school.
Starting with the keynote address, CEDEC had a wide variety of sessions to choose from. There were lectures specifically for engineers and designers, and even workshops that were geared towards beginners.
The most interesting things can be heard at the keynote address. While the keynote went over topics that may not necessarily be related to my own interests, it was still engaging to listen to, and it stimulated my thoughts and actions. What I feel was an important lesson from the keynote was to “not evaluate things based on whether it is worth studying, or whether it is of interest, but rather to base it on whether something new can be learned.”
As I previously had an interest towards project planning, team management, and development environments, I attended several sessions that were related to them. Regardless of what the session was about, I learned a lot from each of them, and there is no doubt that they would heavily influence what I do from here on out.
The most memorable thing from the sessions I attended was the phrase “before you request someone to help make an idea of yours into reality, be sure to prove that your idea and their help is necessary first.” It is based on the logic that “if it is a waste of time, you are wasting your own time first and foremost.” As a skill necessary for a team to fully realise their creativity, it is something I want to bear in mind going forward.
Other than the sessions, CEDEC also had an exhibition with a whole range of booths to explore. This included things such as the latest tools and devices, and games that were atypical. I talked about all sorts of things with various exhibitors, discovered various technologies that would allow me to take full advantage of my time in university, and got a glimpse at the various unique points that made each company unique.
In closing, I would like to write about what I regretted the most from this scholarship experience. To tell you the truth, I did not attend the second day of CEDEC because I fell sick. Missing a day of CEDEC is something that I truly regret. No matter how busy you are during the days leading up to CEDEC, be sure to get as much rest as you can. Your body is your most fundamental asset after all. Don’t make the same mistake that I did and lose such an invaluable opportunity.
