初日のスタジオツアーは残念ながら参加できなかったことが非常に悔しいです。なぜなら私が目指すモバイル業界では、知らない人はいない企業を訪問できるチャンスだったからです。
そして2日目からついにCEDEC2014が始まりました。会場は広く、人気の講演では早い段階で列ができていました。体験会などの整理券はすぐになくなってしまったので早めの行動が大切でした。
CEDECに参加するにあたり私が絶対に行きたいと思っていた講義はモバイル・教育・WEBの分野です。CEDECではそれらに関する講義がいくつかあり、かぶってしまったものに関してはどちらに行こうか真剣に悩んで選択しました。
初日に印象的だったのはUnityでオンラインゲーム環境を簡単に実装できるPhotonのワークショップに参加したことです。ゲーム開発はJavaとJavascriptでしかやったことがなく、実際にUnity自体触るのは初めてでしたが、ほんの1時間もかからずにオンラインでチャットをしながら複数のプレーヤーと交流できるプログラミングを体験できました。開発初心者でも一緒に実装することができる作業なので、これはぜひともインターン先でも導入してみたいと思いました。
石戸奈々子さん(NPO法人CANVAS)の子どもたちのプログラミング学習の現状に関する講義も大変勉強になりました。
岸本好弘さん(東京工科大学)の「ゲームのチカラの社会貢献への展開 ~日本初の『シリアスゲームジャム』による英語学習ゲームと、世界の子ども達に発信する数学学習ゲーム『Global Math」の試み~』は今回の講演で初めて知りましたが、とても興味深かったです。夏休みが終わった後にシリアスゲームのコンテストがあるようなので、同級生等を誘って参加しようと考えています。
気づいたらあっという間に日が暮れていました。
二日目に印象的だったのはドワンゴのニコニコ動画で人気のあるゲーム実況です。これからのゲームの宣伝や遊び方・あり方・文化が変わってきているように感じました。ユーザーとゲームがどう付き合っていくのか考えさせられましたし、実況のことも考えてゲームを作っていくべきだと感じました。
3日目は本当に聞きたい講義が多く、どれもこれも聞きに行きたかったのですが選択を強いられました。印象的だったのはメインホールでの名越稔洋さん(セガ取締役CCO)の講演です。1人のゲーム業界人として本気でやってきた軌跡の一片を感じさせてくれる素敵な講演でした。
デベロッパーズナイトでは任天堂のプログラマーの方など普段では絶対に会えない業界の方と気軽にお酒を交えつつ話すことができました。そこで聞くことのできた生の意見やアドバイスはこのような機会でしか実現できないものだったと感じました。これから業界に就活するにあたり大変ためになる話ができました。
3日間のCEDEC2014は一日中にも関わらず気が付いたら暗くなっているような夢中なひと時でした。本当にあっという間に時間が過ぎていきました。とても有意義で密度の濃い時間を過ごせたと思います。
今回の経験で視野が広がりました。また、同期のスカラー生との出会いも忘れがたいものです。

I am Sara Kato, a first year student in the mobile application course at Tokyo Multimedia Vocational School. This year I took part in CEDEC 2014 as an IGDA CEDEC scholarship recipient. Not only was I able to attend many valuable lectures and talks by industry professionals, I was also able to speak directly to people who work in the industry during parties following the lectures. Though it was only a few days, this experience had a great impact on me. I feel that if you want to work in the game industry, you should definitely participate in this event.
Unfortunately I could not take part in the studio tour the first day, and I regret it deeply. It was a chance for me, as someone who hopes to one day work in the mobile industry, to visit famous companies everyone knows.
On the second day, CEDEC 2014 finally began. The venue was large, with people lining up early for the popular lectures. Because tickets for events like the trial session ran out so quickly, it was crucial to arrive early.
The lectures I definitely wanted to attend at CEDEC were those related to the mobile, education, and web fields. There were a number of lectures on those topics, but as some of them overlapped, I selected the ones to attend after serious and careful consideration.
My first day I attended the memorable workshop about Photon, a networking framework that easily packages Unity games for the internet. Prior to this, I had only had experience developing in Java and Javascript, so this was my first time actually using Unity, but within an hour I had programmed a way to chat online and interact with multiple players. Because it could be used by even the least experienced beginners, I definitely want to try introducing it to interns and the like.
I also learned quite a bit from Ms. Nanako Ishito's (NPO corporation CANVAS)lecture on the state of programming education for children.
Though it was during Mr. Yoshihiro Kishimoto's (Tokyo University of Technology) lecture on “The Power of Games to Contribute to the Advancement of Society: Japan's First Serious Game Jam”, that I first learned about how English study games and math games aimed at children around the world, known as the Global Math Experiment, were created, the subject interested me deeply. After summer vacation ends, I am thinking of inviting some of my classmates to participate in a serious game contest.
Before I realized it, the day had ended.
The most impressive thing from the second day was the overview of the state of DOWANGO's popular games on NicoNico Douga. I felt that I could get a sense of how game culture, the way games are played and advertised, and the state of games has changed. Because this made me think about the relationship between games and their users in the future, I feel that games should be made with the current climate in mind.
There were many lectures I wanted to attend on the third day and though I wanted to go to all of them, I was forced to choose. The one that impacted me the most was the lecture by Mr. Nagoshi (SEGA board member CCO). It was a wonderful lecture which made me feel honored to have a prominent member of the game industry truly come to speak to us.
On Developers' Night, we had a chance to chat casually and drink with industry professionals we normally would not be able to meet, such as programmers from Nintendo. I feel that without this chance, I never could have heard the advice and honest opinions I did. I was able to have conversations that will be tremendously useful in securing a future position in the game industry.
Despite that CEDEC 2014 ran all day for three days, it was engrossing right up until the very last second. The time really did fly by quickly. I believe that every moment was densely packed and worthwhile.
My horizons have been broadened by this experience. Also, I will not forget meeting my fellow scholarship recipients.
