Hello, my name is Yuka Ninohira and I had the pleasure of taking part in the 2014 Tokyo Game Show Scholarship.  I currently school at Becker College in the Game Design Concentration in Interactive Media Design.

At the Scholar Program we had the chance to visit studios along with taking part in the Tokyo Game Show itself, and also participated in a few of the after parties.  I would have never thought that an application that I turned in just for the heck of it would end up in such an enhancing experience.  I ended up skipping a week of school, but it was definitely worth the trip.

On the first day, we had introductions at a café nearby the station we met up at.  It has been a couple of weeks since the scholar program ended, but even then I remember this day very well.  Part of the reason was because everyone was so international, but also because our opinions on different kinds of matters relating to the industry were so different due to our diverse backgrounds.  Throughout the trip I learned a lot from mentors and developers, but I feel that I have also learned a whole lot from the other scholars.
After our brief break at the café, we moved onto visiting three studios.  This time we had the pleasure of visiting UEI, Land Ho!, and Aiming.

UEI was the first studio that we visited, and something that caught my interest during the three presentations that we listened to was the fact that they were developing programs for younger students to create games.  In between one of the presentations, we had the chance to tour around the actual studio. Each desk that we passed by in the office was very unique and showed a lot of character.  We also had a chance to talk with one of the artists to ask questions about their pipeline as well as watch them work, which was also very inspirational.

At Land Ho! we received a lecture on working in the Japanese industry and got some insight about working for publishers and developers.  Before this presentation I had never thought about which side I would like to work for, so it was a very eye-opening talk.  Before the actual scholar program started, scholars were granted the chance to ask the studios questions beforehand, and Land Ho! was one of the studios that had given me a reply.  From the reply, it was interesting that we were able to identify the difference in the language used in the industry between the states and Japan.

Last but not least, the studio we visited was Aiming, and here we were given a presentation that went into depth about three distinct jobs in the industry which included programming, design, and art.  We also received a quick explanation about what companies might generally expect from a newly graduated student, and Aiming’s process for hiring interns and new employees.  At the end we were able to directly talk with the people who work for Aiming, which I learned a lot from.  Something that struck a note with me throughout my visit at this studio was that you could tell that they value passion as well as the thirst for challenges a lot.  It was a very inspirational visit that I will never forget.

All three studios that we visited this day were unique, and I had a great deal of fun while learning a lot from them.  Through the studio tours, my impression has changed a great deal on the Japanese industry, making it much more difficult for me to figure out what country I would like to find a job in when I graduate.  I initially had little intention for a job out in Japan but I am now seriously reconsidering it. While I still haven’t found my answer yet, I plan to prepare in case I do by utilizing the advice I received when we visited the studios.  I would like to take a moment before I continue and thank all of those who were involved in the studio tours, the studios themselves, and the ones who made this possible.

At Tokyo Game Show, we were able to go around many booths that showcased titles released this year, titles to be released in the near future, and titles that are coming from international countries.  This included AAA to indie companies, making it a pretty diverse game show.  As a scholar, we took part in the Keynotes and “Sense of Wonder Night”.  Sense of Wonder Night was a competition that featured very unique and interesting types of games from around the world.  These games were made by relatively small teams, which taught me that great games don’t necessarily need hundreds of people on the team or multi-million dollar budgets.  After watching the presentation, I felt a goal form inside of me to make a game in the near future that entices people just as much as these wonderful creations did.

On the second and third days of Tokyo Game Show we were given the opportunity to take part in the international party and INDIE STREAM FES.  Upon attending, I was pleasantly surprised with a reunion with a couple people that I had met previously in the states at PAX EAST and GDC.  I also had the chance to speak with the extremely talented people who had showcased their games in Sense of Wonder Night and other great industry developers.  I hope to speak with each and every one of them again, not as a scholar next time, but as a person who also works in the industry we all know and love.

One of the biggest highlights of my entire adventure in this scholar program was getting to meet and know the other scholars.  Everyone had a different and unique background ranging from age to the country they came from, which made the discussions we had so much more interesting and fresh.  All the different perspectives would crash together and we would discover something new, and every moment we spent together was a whole lot of fun.

I would like to thank the scholarship program for gathering us who would otherwise be scattered across the world.  I would also like to recommend this program for anyone who is interested in the game industry; the entire experience was just so priceless.  Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to IGDA JAPAN, Tokyo Game Show, and the studios we visited for sharing with us such a great time.  Thank you very much!

I look forward to seeing you again someday. (Becker College , Yuka Ninohira)
